Yang mei
We came across these berries at Ying’s work. They had a delivery of over thirty baskets of this fruit from another province. Apparently it ripens about now and is only available for about a month all year. I have never seen them before! They have a similar taste to a raspberry, but are completely spherical and roughly the size of a 2p or 50p coin. The surprise is that they have a stone in the middle, but if you don’t mind that, they’re delicious. Today I was offered some yang mei wine by some people in a town near Suzhou (I’ll get the name as soon as I can!) and it was pretty potent but also tasty. I ate as many yang mei as I could before I began to feel rather like I’d overdone it. What you can see in the photo is a tiny fraction of the bucket we were given!

mmm yum mei! x
