Very empressive

(All dressed up in JingShan Park; mum, Jane, me: Beijing, China)

If I feel I need to inject some colour here, I just return to this set of images; they are saccharine and tacky and wonderful. This is a great one in which each of us are trying terribly hard not to snort with laughter. We had drawn quite the crowd and other waiting customers were getting their money’s worth out of us by taking many of their own snaps. Sometimes I wonder how many holiday albums I am nestled in that I don’t even know about, or how many people claim to know me.

Jane is holding back from laughing, but as you can see, only just. She almost looks like she’s in pain. She has been dressed in the imperial yellow of the Emperor himself, so she was coping with the fact that a change of costume had completely altered her gender and then she had been festooned with enormous plastic pearls. It was pretty hilarious and plus, the bystanders were not being particularly discreet, but openly snapping cameras and light heartedly jeering at us. My eyes are laughing, but I am managing to retain a demure smile by a hair’s breadth. My mother, on the left has clearly spotted some of our adoring fans in the crowd and they are probably pointing their fingers and grinning or coming within three feet of her to take a photograph (or five). All in all, I was deeply embarrassed at the start of this escapade, but had warmed up by the point at which this image was taken. I suppose I will really have to endorse this ridiculous tourist diversion, won’t I?
