Twin toes
(Pedicure at Li Gong Di, Suzhou, China)
I have never had a pedicure before, though I had my nails painted once but I don’t think that really counts. I accompanied a friend, Liz, to a nail salon at the weekend and we each had a full pedicure with nail varnish. Like I said, I have never done this before, mainly because my feet generally horrify me; my toes are very short and the big one is vastly oversized. To top it off, two toes on my left foot are formed like a miniature pair of Siamese twins. I went along with Liz to dispel the fear (a childish one, I admit) that I will be laughed at and thrown out for having such ugly trotters.
Of course I wasn’t thrown out – though as usual the little pair of toes attracted some attention as the lady painting my nails was concerned she would hurt them by pulling them apart. I took this photograph so you could see how difficult it is to poke my toes into the foam toe separators required for varnish application. I thought it was quite hilarious, but to give her her due, she made several attempts to ease them in, but to no avail. You can possibly see that the toes of my right foot are straining with the pressure of the separator and the left twin-toes have been left out of the entire foamy situation.
Today in real time, I am in Shanghai with my aunt and my mum – hopefully!
