(Pencil illustration of a French town by the sea: Carlisle, England)

Fourteen straight hours of drawing has prevented me doing anything of note today, unless we’re counting my submissions for an entry to an illustration competition. The ‘House of Illustration’ called for people to produce three book illustrations and a binding design for Camus’ The Outsider. Here is a detail of one of my images, a French seaside town in the 1940s. The image that I took this element from actually shows this view through a small prison window, but it all seemed very dark and depressing so early in the new year, so I just removed the jolly element for show.

Due to events of the past weeks, I have not managed to make a start on these drawings until this very week and I must confess that none of my four submitted drawings existed yesterday at 9am, but all were finished and uploaded by 11pm that night. Aside from brief (but cherished) mealtimes, I spent the entire day scrawling, scanning, clicking and manipulating some pencil illustrations. I was genuinely amazed that I managed such a short timeframe so effectively, though I do have a claw hand and shiny fingers from colouring in. Next time I will certainly begin in earnest at least one day before the deadline. Kidding, mum. I’ll start a couple of days before.

If you’d like to see the other images in the set, have a look here.
