Tiered theatre
(Dancers in the Summer Palace: Beijing, China)
One of the pleasant aspects of a visit to the Summer Palace is the fact that the staff attempt to recreate some of the situations found in the Palace at the time it was lived in. This is a decent image of a slightly lacklustre performance by a troupe of dancing girls. They were beautifully turned out in costumes that were tied on over their normal clothes – to be fair, it was pretty chilly in Beijing so I could completely understand the layering up.
They are performing on the stage of a three tiered theatre; one lower stage for dance and acting performance, the next one for the acting Gods and some musicians and the top for instruments and very special presentations. It was a really incredible size, considering the audience would have consisted merely of the Imperial family, their aides and important delegates and guests. The size and grandeur of everything there was seriously mind boggling, this being one of the best examples. The posts will be back on track tomorrow when I’m back from my brief family break.
