(One of the meals Ying prepared for me: Suzhou, China)

When I was ill a few weeks ago, I didn’t leave the flat for a few days, except to visit hospital.  During that time I did very little aside from flicking buttons on the television and slipping in and out of consciousness.  That took up all my time, so it fell to Ying to take care of me over the weekend, which he did with great aplomb.  I photographed this lunch because he made such a sterling effort to make it cheery and generally delightful.  He prepared a little boiled egg with a tiny fish shaped bottle of soy sauce, toast soldiers with the crusts removed and a pepper grinder for taste.  Shortly after consuming the egg and a few soldiers, I fell asleep once again, leaving Ying to clear up and polish off the remains with his egg.
