Snow way

(Garnethill viewing point: Glasgow, UK)

It was another busy day in Glasgow yesterday, not assisted by early morning shenanigans; running up and down icy Glasgow hills before first light. I spent a couple of hours in bed to recover, then rose groggily to greet a truly beautiful winter day. The snow is still outside, now spoiled slightly by families and their sledges, yapping park dogs rolling in it and cars tearing it up. The snow is spoiled somewhat, but the atmosphere in Glasgow was generally one of festive holiday fun. I spent part of the day on a jaunt in the snow with my friend, John. I hadn’t planned to, I anticipated drawing and keeping warm for the remainder of the day, but I found the sunlight irresistibly attractive, so I skipped out into the whiteness.

The fall of snow has a rather calming effect on Glasgow; there seemed to be the same number of people out and about as a normal Saturday, the difference being that there was less rushing, less hassle and more grinning. The sky was, as you can see, completely clear and the light was perfectly crisp, without haze or mist. It’s so difficult to choose a good photograph, but I hope the light in this one is pleasing. The snow appears to have hit everything side on, as you might be able to see from the side of the bench – it was a veritable blizzard from what I can gather. This picture looks over the west end, it is taken from the same place as the Glasgow graffiti of a couple of days ago – though I noticed today that it was completely snowed under. Unless you had seen it before, there was no way to know it was even there at all.
