Snovember

(Children in the snow: Glasgow, UK)

I took so many pictures again today, but this one captures the heavy snowfall best. When I woke up, I pulled back the curtains and was met with a veritable whiteout on the other side of the glass. When I called my gran to check she was alright, she said of the November snow, “och, it’s early this year, yes, very early. We never get it this early”. The snow, as here, was teeming down, leaving crisp, dry, perfect snow half a foot deep everywhere. If it carries on, we will have a foot of snow here in another few hours. The grit lorries were doing the rounds throughout the day, though most of the small streets around Garnethill (my area of town) were still untempered with salt. I saw several cars at different points grating their wheels in the snow, much to the drivers’ chagrin. It’s especially nauseating as I live on a hill so I have been listening to the revving of engines and the skid of tyres for much of the day.

Kelvingrove Park was well stocked with families again today, but even the occasional skier and snowboarder – I have never seen anything like it here. I wasn’t skiing myself, though I donned my ski salopettes and jacket, plus my mad fuzzy hat. The snow was blowing in every direction (including up) so any tiny clothing gap felt outrageously exposed and immediately chill and damp. I had to borrow an extra scarf when I went exploring with two friends – they pointed out the park heron hiding under a shrub in the pond. It looked very hunched and chilly standing there in the wet, a lone, grouchy looking mallard duck by its side, treading water. As for the humans, we were all having a fantastic time, rolling in the snow, firing cold marshmallow snowballs at each other; every car bonnet is a shelf of ample frozen ammunition. On the way back home, I spotted these three mini miscreants, pushing a ball of snow along the empty road, presumably to create an enormous snowman. That is one of the pleasing side effects of heavy snow, that the roads are clear except for very timid, surprisingly silent occasional traffic, leaving the near untouched snow for the use of the rest of us. It’s like time stops and the city becomes unreal for a day or two.

  1. After seeing this one going back to the previous one, immediately I agree
with you how peaceful and calm it was. Hope this condition is there only for a day or two.

  2. [...] there has been no frost – it has been very mild here. A strange start to the winter given that this was the scene on this day last year; six inches deep in snow and counting. We haven’t gotten away too lightly though as rain has been positively teeming down for most of [...]
