Snoozy Harvey

(Harvey the standard poodle, having a snooze: Edinburgh, Scotland)

Last night I was in attendance of a friend’s (Robbie) birthday party in Edinburgh, a home affair at Anna’s house with pizza making from scratch, various beverages and a couple of party games. It was all quite civilized, sort of. Poor Harvey, Anna’s dog, was in some degree of confusion for the duration of the evening, weaving in and out of legs, sniffing everyone, licking stray hands that people weren’t keeping an eye on and chomping down the insoles out of one guest’s shoes. Hence, this morning after his walk, he was absolutely exhausted and lay prone on the floor, leaving me a unique opportunity to photograph him.

I didn’t make a fantastic job of the shoot, but his inky black coat prevents any detail coming through except in very good light. His eyes are usually invisible, clouded by a dark, fluffy bouffant of poodle hair and he loses all definition in the evenings. Mostly, I remember him as an approximate dog shaped shadow, padding softly around Anna’s house in constant search of entertainment.

As well as being the hundredth International Women’s Day today and ‘pancake day’ (Shrove Tuesday), it’s my birthday! I was slightly disappointed however – a few days ago I made the shocking discovery that I was a year older than I thought I was. I have been basking in my twenty fifth year (making me twenty four) for well, a mite longer than I should – though involuntarily, I might add. The initial disappointment disappeared last night and this morning as I’ve spent much of the day with friends; laughing, chatting, squinting in the sunshine, braving the gale force winds, walking the dog, wandering around Edinburgh, eating pancakes and generally having a rare old time. I’m on the train back to Glasgow as I write, the weather is closing in (as it invariably does every year on the eighth of March at some point) and it is beginning to rain. A busy evening awaits me as I will be performing with the Power Cut Choir on Friday night, so a three hour rehearsal is on the cards tonight between 6-9pm. Despite having a day of virtual rest today, last night was a very late night and I don’t feel quite ready for the musical onslaught in just over an hour. However, I do want us to be brilliant, so needs must. I’ll try not to be so late with my next update!
