Ski Sunday

(Posing on a snowball in Kelvingrove Park: Glasgow, UK)

If you’re in the UK, you might be finding the current snow situation quite tiresome by now, but for some of us, it will ever remain a novelty. This was me on Sunday, clad in top to toe ski gear, though the set has probably seen better days. The painfully red trousers (or rather chest high salopettes) have been tucked into my wellies because they are my mother’s old pair from the 1970s. They are even flared, just like everything seemed to be back then; they are warm, but otherwise fairly impractical, especially since I am slightly too tall for them. To be honest, they’re a rather snug fit in every way, so it took me a second to get comfortable atop my perch. The jacket was handed down to me from a friend and when I first tried it on, still had a crumpled Colorado ski pass from 1992 in the pocket. Fortuitously, the red in the jacket is the exact shade as the bottom half of my outfit. It is a striking sight in the snow. Since I’m on the subject of my outfit – big thanks to my Canadian friend, Liz for gifting me my cosy mittens just in the nick of time.

Behind me is the pond, though it is practically invisible after snowfall onto the thick ice. It was that that first attracted us to the vicinity of this icy obelisk. Perhaps this snowball upon which I am posed was supposed to evolve eventually into a snowman, but it had been neglected, maybe due to the sheer scale and weight of it. Unless Mr Snowman was given a tiny head, it would have been a monstrous effort to roll it up onto his shoulders. It may be wedged between the bin and bench because that is where it finished rolling; there is a substantial hill behind the photographer, which could have assisted in the creation of a sphere this enormous. Regardless of what it was supposed to be, it was merely one of many such structures in the park; there were more snowmen than I have ever seen in one day – tall, three tiered ones with carrot noses, massive, squat chubby ones and then more sculptural ones with stick arms.

Plans for an exhibition I am working on in Edinburgh have been thwarted somewhat by the inclement weather, but hopefully the snow will ease off slowly and we can return to a semblance of normality here. Apparently there the snow is eighteen inches deep and counting – I’m not sure I envy the Edinburgers.
