Shrimp soup
(Soup prepared by Ying’s mum: Suzhou, China)
I thought I’s let you into the wonderful culinary world that Ying’s mum created in our flat! She insisted on preparing many meals for both of us with an onus on promoting health, yet also creating tasty delicacies. This was one of my favourites. For some reason she was horrified when I produced a camera and there was a running joke throughout her stay that her exploits would be recorded here. Soon no one will visit us for fear that I will expose them for performing everyday tasks or even cooking something enormously delicious. How do people put up with me?
In here there’s pork, shrimps (evidently), mushrooms noodles and some miscellaneous green vegetable. She cooked a wide variety of dishes with foods I have never even seen before; white radish, lotus roots (and seeds) and a long stick that had to be bent in half to carry home – I think it was called Japanese ginger but honestly, she could have said anything an I would have believed her.
