Shower buddies

(One side of the bathroom in the hut: Koh Samet, Thailand)

I’ve probably mentioned the bugs in Thailand before, the invisible demons pretending to be mosquitoes bit me until Pete began overhearing discussions in shops about them. Apparently one shop owner exclaimed in Thai, “look, a dalmation just walked in – someone’s been sitting too near the water”. She had evidently not realised my friend Pete was translating as we left the postcards, t shirts and Buddha models behind. I have reached a point that when in Asia, I cannot be too concerned about the way I look – people will stare at me anyway! Also, the itching was so agonising that it was unbearable to have anything brushing over it.

Thankfully the millipedes in the shower left us well alone. The tree in there harboured snails and all manner of slimy, crawling things. It was a bizarre experience as whilst showering, I was constantly checking the concrete floor for fire ants (which had caught me out before – their bite feels like the burning end of a cigarette on your skin). There was allegedly a snake that frequented our particular shower – again, we were mercifully left well alone. Even more gratifying was that I didn’t spot a spider on the island until we were almost leaving.  Never, except in a zoo or my childhood tub of plastic animals, have I ever seen something so hideously enormous, with such a menacing demeanor.  It’s legs fanned out to the size of a man’s hand span and there was no way I would have been so carelessly rampaging through the wooded areas if I’d known they were waiting to pounce. It makes the spiders back home look puny.

But hey, when I went to the islands with Stefano, I was the one getting bitten. BAD! http://www.flickr.com/photos/peteza/4197771164/
