Secret chef

(Chef preparing vegetables: Shanghai)

You can just make out this chef in a kitchen through the door.  We could see this from the Jing’An temple, wandering along the back walkway.  Behind the temple is a large area of rubble, possibly belonging to the temple itself, though very little seemed to be happening.  There were builders pacing and men in diggers, but work was moving slowly.  We heard afterwards that this had been one of the hottest days in Shanghai for years, it was possibly 40 degrees, but it felt like a sunny sauna.

Right next to this construction site is a row of buildings, one of which holds the chef and his kitchen.  We were quite surprised that he was so close to all the dust and dirt of the site and was arranging food just inside the open doorway.  This image possibly best illustrates how close and tightly tesselating everything is here; people are living crushed up against each other and Shanghai feels very dense.
