Rice cooker
(Our ‘Comic Sans’ rice cooker)
I’ve wanted a new rice cooker for a long time – they look so cheery and round sitting on a kitchen worktop in every Chinese home I’ve ever visited. We went to Auchan (pronounced ‘oh-shan’) in order to purchase an especially silly one we’d seen with little fat legs and a jolly spherical body. However we were pounced upon by two experts who recommended the Japanese brands, claiming they were better. They look quite traditional with the flowers printed on the side – you can read the beginning of the word ‘delicious’ on the side of this one. (I feel I should mention that this one actually does make the most delicious rice).
They caught us so unawares and convinced us so completely that we grabbed the box and escaped. We only realised after we opened the box at home that this was the very cooker we had laughed at earlier due to the prominent ‘comic sans’ font on the front. It appears everywhere, doesn’t it?

Hi Rosie and Ying,
I have been really enjoying these updates, they distract me from work far too much. Having been there twice I am quite familiar with lots of what you are showing us all, but you are more observant and write it down better than I could. Looking forward to persuading you to be my guide, if I get out there in September or October.
