Punting and spitting

This picture always makes me laugh because the man at the front of the barge is wiping his mouth after, how shall I put it, gobbing into the canal. Is there a proper word for spitting in an almost professional and completely routine way? Answers here please. Just before I took this image, I was standing on the bridge looking through the lends, preparing the shot, admiring the glittering water on this sunny October afternoon and enjoying the comparatively alien landscape when the noise of a Chinese man’s harsh spitting rent the air. He made a champion attempt at spitting into the water, but as you can see, he managed to make a shoddy mess and had to wipe his chin afterwards. I (being innately amused by these sorts of occurrences) thought it was jolly funny and continued with my photography.
