Pretty good
(Hotel sign: Beijing, China)
When we passed this sign, all of us started laughing. I like the use of the phrase ‘pretty good’ for all the aspects of the hotel, rather than ‘excellent’, ‘great’ or even ‘fantastic’. The extra ‘T’ in ‘DON’T’ was also a surprise, though the sign was well constructed compared to some translated sentences in China. The ones that surprise me are the ones for big events. The Expo slogan is ‘Better City, Better Life’ but Ying and I spotted a six foot high sign reading ‘Beeter City, Better Lufe’. Sometimes a translation has passed through an internet translation system and is therefore utterly nonsensical. This hotel one is merely endearing. Just short posts over the next day or so as I’m in a hotel and the internet is seriously pricey!
