Ploughing through it

(Snow plough in Colinton: Edinburgh UK)

The view down the road to Anna’s house is festive, but not particularly easy to negotiate. I have been wearing my snow gear constantly since I arrived here. I’m beginning to tire of the snow slightly since it trebles the time it usually takes to get anywhere. The shop we are holding the exhibition in has one storage heater which we are all usually gathered around. The sub zero temperatures caused the water in the taps to freeze, as well as in the toilet cistern so we were without any running water for almost the entire day. We had to pretend to be customers in local cafes so we could wash our hands and nip to the toilet.

I had another vastly entertaining meal at the hands of Anna’s raucous family. Her father and brother persistently tease me, Anna and Anna’s mother – especially after an ill-advised comment about dogs being derived from unicorns. We covered dating in a crematorium, frozen toilet pans and Anna’s dad falling asleep for a full hour today in a bookshop. Their discourse always causes me to guffaw openly during the meal, but I like to imagine I’m part of the family at these events.

As I write this in Anna’s room at the top of the house, there are intermittent sliding noises coming from the roof – it sounds like wooden blocks shifting, but it’s the snow sliding off the roof.

– Today Rosie is manning the exhibition and then finally returning to Glasgow – with any luck –
