(Advert for ‘Nin Jiom Pei pa Koa’, Nanjing Road: Shanghai, China)

Just a quick extra post to introduce my favourite tonic medication, Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa – this is the cough mixture I have (regrettably) already exhausted my stocks of. The closest thing I can relate it to is ‘calpol’, a medicine for children in the UK. My memories reveal I would feign illness in order to convince my parents to relinquish some, but now I have Pei Pa Koa. It supposedly treats anything from a sore voice to a dodgy chest and I generally take it for any ailment I can get away with.

It has a wonderful taste, like cola, honey and a touch of Dr Pepper. Just a spoonful of it makes me feel immediately improved. I used the last of it yesterday and today I have had to content myself with menthol sweets and Wong Lo Kat herbal tea, which have both proved poor substitutes.

  1. I prefer a nice malt, preferably lagavulin or any of the peaty west coast whiskies.
It reaches most places and if it doesn’t work then you fall asleep anyway!
    Take care.
