Paved with fish

(Fish drying: Zhouzuang, China)

Health and safety would likely be on to these guys with their homemade dried fish snacks. I think the owner of said snacks also had concerns caused by my camera and me. As soon as I finished this rather rushed shot, he traipsed up and swiftly removed the board of fish from the pavement and whisked them indoors. I imagine he was cursing me for the rest of the day, though I was at a loss to explain (in Chinese) why I might be photographing them anyway.

Zhouzhuang contained a wealth of exciting edible opportunities including yesterdays sweets. There was hairy crab, pig trotters, dried shrimps and fish and a host of others, my favourite description being ‘rural’ chicken. Aside from claiming to be ‘free range’ or ‘organic’, I have little clue as to what the ‘rural’ refers to. Next to the description, there was always an image of a solitary, bandy legged chicken, just in case we were in some doubt as to what was being advertised.  In the end, Ying’s mum and I opted for a mixture of fish soup and tasty pig trotter which were both delicious.
