Paddle mist
(Paddle steamer on the river Pu: Shanghai, China)
This is a view across the river to Pudong, where many of the Pavilions for the Shanghai Expo are situated. Often the mist, pollution or cloud completely blots out the view and all that is visible are the boats and bridges. Pudong could be miles away and it is impossible to tell where the other bank might begin. It is eerie and disorienting, especially if it is not a first visit and your expectation is to see the towering blocks and the Pearl TV tower dominating that view.
It is not often that I ever see a paddle steamer, so I was delighted that although the view was ruined, the boats were still out, attempting to make the view less dreary. At night, these boats are a wonder of twinkling lights, some in flashing colour and some chameleon like, changing colours like angry squid. It is amazingly tacky, yet heartwarming.
Apologies for the late post – I had guests staying and my water supply has been cut off all day without warning. It just came back on and I am organising myself, and everything else all over again.
