O-spiciously tenuous

(McDonalds CNY promotions: Singapore)

No one could ever accuse this multinational of missing a trick. In the UK, there’s usually some summer deals, a special Christmas themed dessert or a recession related bargain, but I reckon Singapore McDonald restaurants are scraping the barrel a bit too close with ‘O-spicious Orange’. A Prosperity Burger (plus normal, not particularly lucky curly fries) and an auspiciously orangey latte will set you up not only for Chinese New Year celebrations but also for hyperactivity followed by a spectacular caffeine and sugar comedown the next day.

I was surprised that with such a wealth of amazingly fast local food that actually has a taste, that parents still took their children to McDonalds. It baffles me. Ying and I went to the food court and had roti prata and chicken rice with beverages and I think it came to a total of around S$5 (about £2.50). Roti prata is a delightful mix of deliciously bad things – this is where my argument against McDonalds falls flat, except of course regarding the inflated pricetag. It comprises a bowl of homemade curry sauce and a minimum of two pancakes. They were freshly made that moment as I ordered and are puffy round affairs like a naan bread. The curry is poured over the pancakes, then sprinkled with a copious handful of sugar –I was so enamoured with it that over New Year, I ate it twice.
