Noodle splash alert
(Ying eating Mr Kong’s noodles: Suzhou, China)
Ying was given a free bib when he ordered the special in this restaurant – I was slightly embarrassed, but as you can see, he was thrilled with his decision. We have been here several times and ordered different sets of noodles, but each time we have ogled the special, a dish three times the price of anything else on the menu. It claims to be the best tasting, most nutritious part of the cow so Ying was suitably impressed when it arrived. It came with a host of extras – you can also see the meat laid out with the bone, ready to add to the noodle soup – it was super tender and tasty and possibly nutritious. We hope so.
This restaurant is on the first floor, above shops on Guan Qian Jie, the main pedestrian street in the centre of Suzhou. It’s a short walk from many of the shops we visit frequently; the hairdressers, the tailors, the tea shops and clothing stores. I’m glad we discovered this place as all the other restaurants in the area are either reasonably cheap, but the meal must be inhaled to make way for the steady stream of fellow diners, or expensive and also mobbed with people. It is difficult to find a place to eat in central Suzhou without having to fight for it. Many places have sofas or benches outside to provide a spot for waiting diners to sit and peruse the menu – some even offer snacks while-u-wait. This was the first time we’ve ever been offered a free bib though. We conscientiously folded it up and we’ve kept it for the next time we need protected from the dreaded noodle splash.
