Nimbus

(View over the M8: Glasgow, Scotland)

Finally, a break in the hideous weather we have been battling of late. I am utterly bored of the damp, chilly weather and I’m ready for an end to it. Today, for the first time this year, I hung washing outside on the washing line. Not my washing line, of course – if you have ever seen the state of my shared garden, you would understand why. Instead, I sneak over to the next door garden, sperated from ours by a low fence and a swinging gate that allows us to reach the bins. They have grass; a real lawn of fresh green blades underneath a series of washing lines. Since they are almost invariably empty, I tend to slip across to dry my laundry, though I am always vigilant in case a resident leans out of their window, as if from an old Mother’s Pride advert and throws something at me. This is completely unfounded conjecture and will likely not happen, but I’m aware that I am probably trespassing. It doesn’t look as bad as I’m making it sound.

I took this picture because of the clouds; they are so jolly, fat and cheery, just like perfect clouds appear in books. They look so solid that it is easy to imagine how legends of Gods living atop them could occur. Anyway, they, along with the clear sky and M8 lamps that look like comic flowers or alien spacecraft on sticks made for a fun image. The nights now are light until amost midnight, never getting fully, completely dark. I find I sleep less well during these months because the light permeates my sleep – however I much prefer it over the dreariness of winter days that seem to last long enough to make a mid morning cup of tea in daylight.

Last night we held a dinner for Min (or rather he held one for us) where he and his girlfriend cooked Korean food and I made my first completely vegan cake. It was a baffling affair, but after making soya milk custard and then following the instructions to throw it into the cake mixture itself, I was positively delighted to discover that it actually tasted of cake. The meal was a resounding success, and amazingly, completely lactose free, since some members of the party have an intolerance. Min will be leaving at the end of the week, so it will be another strange period in the flat where we say farewell to one resident, and then begin the quest to find another suitable flatmate. Constant change here at the moment – hopefully the next one will be a new bathroom. It is almost completely broken in its entirety!

  1. Is that a ball I see before me? What is hovering on the left hand side of the photograph above the trees?

  2. Surely it cannot be the moon.

  3. Well spotted! Indeed it is – I think it belongs to the car garage. Remember those advertising ‘blimps’ we used to get – it’s a poor attempt at one of those!
