Night light
(The last two leaves: Glasgow, UK)
As I walked to my Sunday hotpot appointment, I passed along Sauchiehall Street and onward, past Kelvingrove Park and night time views of the Glasgow University. I passed by one of my favourite roads in Glasgow, Kelvin Way. It is one of those rare streets in Glasgow (or possibly the only one) with park on both sides and trees running its entire length. In the summer, a canopy of branches and translucent leaves casts dappled shade over pedestrians and the traffic, enclosing it from its surroundings. The park railings, statues, Victorian lamps and open vistas feel vaguely Parisian, transporting me instantly from the grimy Sauchiehall traffic and the constant flow of Gibson street at the other end.
It was on the corner where it meets Sauchiehall Street that I took this photograph on Sunday night. These may very well be the last two green deciduous leaves left in Glasgow, and I have captured them before they disappear. I looked at every other tree, branch and twig but there was not a single curling, papery leaf left, only these two elegant individuals waving in the breeze. I must assume that the warmth and light from this lamp is keeping them alive; the last two bursts of summer before a long winter of bare branches. I’ve never seen anything like this in my life – I stood awhile just marveling at them as I waited for the traffic lights to change. In the end I stayed a lot longer that one light change in order to steal one decent image to show you. They are beautiful. If you’re passing that way, they may very well still be there, secretly sunbathing each night when nobody but me is watching.

“Brilliant”
I believe the lamp shown above gives them the light and warmth
that sustain them. Interesting, they are a pair, that makes the picture romantic. Beautiful capture.
