(German Sausage Corner: Suzhou)

There is an area of downtown Suzhou which hosts much of the nightlife, often for the many ex patriates and tourists staying in town, whether they be Europeans, Koreans, Australians, Kiwis, Americans and so on.  Perhaps all have at one time satiated their nocturnal appetite here, at the German Sausage Corner.  It defies reason that such a blatant product of a clash of cultures manages to trap people at night-time.  I suppose it is the equivalent of a merry 2am Chinese takeaway in Glasgow, though this ‘corner’ seems to jar more with its surroundings than a Glaswegian noodle bar.

Novelty will never die, even here.  I heard that a KFC branch opens every two days somewhere in China; it is an invasion of Western culture into the Eastern heartlands, but peculiarly, people here seem to love it.  However far away you can travel, it seems that a German sausage kiosk, a KFC,  a pizza place and an Irish style pub are never too distant.  I have found all of these here in China, and no doubt I will eventually stumble across a Fish and Chip shop, a patisserie or a restaurant offering haggis.
