Lunch on foot
(Lunch: Zhouzhuang, China)
Just comment if you’re becoming fed up of my food and drink fixation, I’ve been hungry since 1985 (as Ying likes to constantly remind me) so it features heavily here, as well as in my life. This snazzy little number is a Zhouzhuang specialty – pig feet in a delicious sauce. From the neat pinches of flesh in the bowl, you can see that my chopstick action has improved somewhat.
Ying’s mum made the unexpected choice of the trotter at lunchtime on our excursion. She generally opts for the more healthy option with as little superfluous grease and oil as possible. Unfortunately for me, I thought, the trotter’s tender meat is encased in a blubbery, shiny layer bound to be avoided instantly. I imagine that like myself, she had smelled the sweet tang of the cooking all morning and decided that finally, the time to treat ourselves had arrived. Ying and I once bought a bag of pig feet from ‘The Fish Plaice’ off the Saltmarket in Glasgow. I was dubious at first, especially as each one cost us just 10p. He made a luscious repast that due to its enormity was served up for three days without complaint. It remains one of my ultimate favourites. I will endeavour to find out what it is cooked with, though I recall one main ingredient is black beans. If you ever have the chance, try it, I doubt you’ll regret it. If you have already, it’s tasty, isn’t it?
