Little dragons
(A dragonfly: these breed and live in the gardens around the flat, their bodies are as long as an index finger and their wingspan is much wider than my hand)
Apologies to anyone who was awaiting a post over the weekend – I have the most rotten cold and I spent most of Sunday in bed or kippered out on the sofa. I think I’ve caught it because of all the new germs I’ve been exposed to, but it’s probably made worse because I was already ill and my body is still saying “no no no” to the climate.
I’m back, but I’m still on a strict diet of soups and I’m pretty much under house arrest; the hazy pollution will only serve to worsen my condition. Interestingly I noticed that on Sundays here, you can see much further than any other day. I reckon that the reduced traffic at the weekends makes for a clearer Sunday.
I’ve spoken about the traffic noise before, but actually this is overtaken by all the bugs here! There are crickets that chirp at night, but there’s another creature calling during the day. Every minute, the hum of the traffic is drowned out by a buzzing, hissing sound (like a rattlesnake) which crescendos and then fades out again. I imagine this to be another cricket, but I never see them, just hear them in the trees. It was a bit frightening at first because I’ve never heard such a loud insect!

beautiful picture!
