Lighting the night
(Entrance to the Forbidden City by night: Beijing, China)
I was impressed by this view. As night falls in Beijing, just as in any other Chinese city I have yet visited, it comes alive in a novel, neon filled way. The light given off from all the decoration is immense and you can perhaps see the glare on the left of the image from Tiananmen Square itself. The entire place is floodlit to within a hair’s breadth of daylight and even the water is uplit in swirling multicolours. As soon as we got closer to the entrance so I could take a full frontal shot, (you may have seen it here, http://china.analoguegirl.co.uk/forbidding-night/) the area was mobbed with people taking their own photographs in a kind of camera filled scrum. I managed to weave my way through the rabble to get my shot, but not before several people had followed me with their fingers on the shutter buttons to cries of “picture picture!” or “photo!” Tiananmen is obviously not a haunt for pale people at night. I was too easily spotted under the floodlights and managed to eventually escape with my dignity somewhat intact.
Just a quick post today as I’m frantically penciling away some new drawings ready for an application. Being freelance often presents motivation difficulties, but not today; the deadline for posting is tomorrow so I really need to get my skates on.
