Light by Night
(A bridge over the moated Old Town by night, two men row towards us)
Last night, Ying and I finally had a chance to explore a portion of Old Suzhou. By night, it is still busy with scooters, taxis, cars and bikes and the tooting doesn’t cease either. What strikes me most about urban China is the lights – there are thousands and thousands of bulbs constantly burning through the dark. The back street restaurants and quieter areas are festooned with strings of fairy or chaser lights, as well as any building with any decorative potential! Our hotel, for example has some very traditional parts, especially the decoration on the roof – so the edge of it is lit in strings of buttery yellow all night. You can see a similar orange scene in the photo here. Also, if you see the entry “Staying Cool”, it shows the Pagoda generously illuminated, as it is until midnight.
