Korean Kuisine

(Sang Min with a mouthful of Korean food: Glasgow, Scotland)

Last night, my flatmate Sang Min and I had an impromptu dinner to celebrate his successful end of term review. It was a feast of Korean delights, accompanied by rice flower wine, beer and dessert. He has been teasing me for some time about appearing here – he’s read ‘world meets rosie’ a few times and seems quite disappointed not to have been documented pictorially yet. Hopefully he doesn’t mind appearing with his mouth full – we were just tucking into the spread, which had taken some time to prepare. There was a dish he jokingly described as ‘Korean Pizza’ – a type of fried omelette affair), sweet fried beef, dumplings and Korean seafood miso soup. It was fantastic. I helped a bit, but I was probably more of a hindrance.

For one of the very few times in the many months we have lived in next door rooms, we have had a one to one chat and found out a little bit more about the people we are each sharing a kitchen and bathroom with. It is amazing that two people can live so close together yet not really be close. Usually flatmates end up being close friends to me, but perhaps its because I’m getting older (usually a little older than my flatmates these days…) or because we have such different lifestyles, our paths rarely cross. Even though I really like both the people I live with, we spend time together so rarely that most chance meetings are an opportunity to simply catch up with our latest news, rather than hold lengthy, deep chats. Hopefully this is the beginning of a pattern of shared meals – next time Ishbel is home, we’ll try for another three way meal situation at least.

Edinburgh beckons again so there may not be a post tomorrow…

– Today Rosie is going to a business meeting and travelling to Edinburgh to an art exhibition opening with Mr Nice (ex-flatmate and good friend) in Scotland –
