It’s a mystery

(Murder mystery characters: Glasgow, Scotland – This animated file may take a few moments to load)

If this works, it will be a first for ‘world meets rosie’; an animated post! I’m bringing you back to the UK from Asia, just for one post. Fear not, I have many images and experiences yet to share regarding Singapore and its environs, but I couldn’t resist sharing this with you. This is what I was up to this weekend; some friends had organised a dinner party with some extra thrills, a 1930s murder mystery dinner.

Each person had a designated character profile and therefore had to arrive at the dinner with a particular outfit on, befitting their instructions. I (on the extreme right) was ‘Little Fitz, a ventriloquist – naturally I had to bring my dummy, or puppet. I didn’t have the time or materials (or really, the inclination) to create an entire full size puppet with a moving mouth, so I settled for a plaster cast wine bottle with a revolving head on a chopstick! You can see my plaster companion, ‘Ziggy’ in the foreground with an almighty grin on his face. I put the finishing touches to him the night before, and after I had inked him up, I had to write a post and go to bed. Just before turning in, I set him facing the wall so he wouldn’t be looking at me whilst I was asleep. I awoke in the night, convinced he had moved. How strange everything seems in the liquid dark of the middle of the night. Of course, in the morning, he was exactly as I had left him. He has however been transferred to a cupboard since the dinner itself.

I was attempting to explain to Ying how a mystery dinner works, but in fact, it is rather like a board game. In essence, it gives ‘adults’ cause to dress up, play pretend and play a guessing game of who killed who. It is all very silly and isn’t to everyone’s taste, but all present gave some worthy performances as their respective personalities. For myself, pretending to be a man holding a puppet with homicidal tendencies was a challenge, but I think we all managed.

Please be patient with today’s post. It may take a minute or so to load, but you should see ten images in quick succession instead of the usual one. If you have any problems, let me know and I’ll see what I can do – after all, I have never created a file like this before!
