(Instamatic photographs from recent trip L-R: eating a flutschfinger lolly, in the botanical gardens, posing in front of a coach: Berlin, Germany)

Even though I’m in London at the minute, this weekend has been very quiet so I thought I’d bring you back to Germany where I spent two weeks last month, primarily in Berlin. Instamatic pictures have a certain appeal for me whilst travelling as they become a tangible element of that memory even at the time. It was decided by my friend Maz and by Ying that ridiculous glasses should be worn in every image, not least to set off the shock of newly bleached white blonde hair.

The left hand image is of me enjoying an ice lolly that looks like a hand with the index finger pointing upwards. It is akin to a similar tasting lolly in the UK that is shaped like a space rocket. However, the name of this German monstrosity is ‘flutsch finger’, translating roughly as ‘slippery finger’, so the moniker doesn’t redeem it much. I have no idea why this is acceptable in Germany as certainly in the UK, this sort of thing would be frowned upon terribly. I found the lolly refreshing and easy on the wallet so I ate several during my time there. It was beautiful weather in Berlin most of the time –it only turned for the worse when we headed south to the mountains where it drizzled twenty four hours a day. There I managed to discover another lolly with the name ‘BumBum’ which also caused me immense amusement.

The other two photographs are also from Berlin and were somewhat posed; one Ying took through his glasses during a sunny visit to the botanischer garten, giving it a golden hue, and the other was taken as we passed a coach from a travel company, ‘Rosi Reisen’. They’re a bit silly, but they’re just a different documentation of my recent travels.
