In third place…
(Friends Florence and Paddy sampling pickled eggs in the Prince George pub: London, UK)
They will no doubt hate me if they see this, but it’s a fine depiction of the effect a potent pickled egg can have on the system. The eggs were part of our winnings from a triumphant third place in a pub quiz last night, I say winnings but the prize was in fact drinks to the value of five pounds. Having no need of any further beverages from the bar, we decided that a range of snacks would be more worthwhile, hence the tasting of the local pub delicacy, the humble pickled egg. For a start, I was enthralled by the combination of cocktail stick and cupcake wrapper as a mode of serving. We were advised by bar staff that a few drops of Tabasco sauce would bring out the flavour. We cannot dispute this fact, but I decline to add if the flavour was a favourable one; it was fiery, tangy and rubbery. Needless to say, if you haven’t gathered from her facial expression, Florence was not able to finish her egg.
Oh yes, so I never did really explain what I’m doing here in London. Aside from the general, ever present pressures of meeting with old friends, making new ones and exploring London’s assortment of social establishments, I am looking for work. Since making the decision to be an illustrator full time, I have been splitting my time between freelance jobs and with my own projects, (one of these being next year’s calendar: http://www.analoguegirl.co.uk/news/calendar-ahoy/). So since Glasgow is relatively quite small, I’ve been approaching children’s publishers here to wow them with my creativity, as well as meeting other more established illustrators to glean inside knowledge from them.
In the rest of the time afforded me, I have been taking in some of the sights and attractions; Kew Gardens, Thames Walkway, and also exhibitions and events in the Design Museum, Jerwood Space, V&A, Haunch of Venison and the like. Today I shall be meeting my Russian friend to see the Gauguin exhibition and the now famous sunflower seeds of Ai Weiwei. Perhaps you’ll see a photograph of it here tomorrow…
