Ice ice baby
(Frozen condensation on bedroom window: Glasgow, UK)
Imagine my dismay yesterday morning as I awoke to this; firstly, that’s a lot of condensation, but that I can deal with. Almost everyone’s windows are steamed up because of the shocking contrast in temperature within and without. However, the alarming point is that those pockets of ice you can see are not on the outside, oh no, the inside of the window is frozen. It was the same in many of my friend’s houses and it certainly affected every window in my house. Disappointingly, the tumble drier was out of action because the ventilation window in the kitchen was frozen shut. We tugged at it, but it almost felt like the wood would split, rather than the ice. Yesterday it was a breathtaking minus nine degrees during the entire day, growing substantially cooler as soon as dusk creeps on. Thankfully, it seems to have been a one night event. And you might be relieved to learn that that wee icicle is on the outside. I feel very deeply for anyone who has been trapped inside their home or car during this weather – it’s a frightening prospect now, rather than being the fun filled diversion it was at the beginning. Hopefully today we will begin to see the decline of the ice, but to be honest, I’m not going to count on it. For anyone reading this not affected by the British ice and snow epidemic, apologies if you’re getting bored of reading about it – we are too!
Yesterday I received a phone call whilst en route to visit my Gran. I was laden with a bag of potatoes and various other staples. The weather has been causing power cuts and various other connection problems so I was offered a short term illustration job in lieu of that. I was completely delighted, though when I enquired about the timescale of the project, it turned out it was for that day. After explaining the Gran food parcel visit situation, I worked on it as soon as I made it home for seven straight hours from 4pm yesterday. I did stop for dinner, so I was finished after midnight. What had begun as a relaxing jaunt to Glasgow’s East End turned into a late night deadline state of affairs. Today I have to get back through to Edinburgh to pick up my effects from the exhibition last weekend. It sounds as though we made healthy profits in the face of overwhelming odds, so I don’t mind the journey too much. Hopefully trains will still be running today.
