Honey honey
(Honey on the comb: Bangkok)
This is the piece of honeycomb we bought in Chatuchak market a few days ago. It was sitting in a plastic basin with other larger specimens. It looks decidedly more munched now as we’ve eaten about half of it. I will probably suffer some amount of weight gain from this trip as I have been consuming all manner of rich, fatty (but exceedingly tasty) delicacies. We have found a couple of stray bees on the honey, but no larvae as promised. I’m not too disappointed. This honey is very sweet and a little smoky, we wondered if that may be because the bees were smoked out of their home before this comb was trimmed from the tree. You might be able to see the twigs poking out either end.
I found a bottle in the fridge that from appearances seemed to be a slightly foamy whisky, but it was a large bottle of honey. I’ve never seen honey in a container any larger than a jar, but here it is sold by the litre. There turned out to be several bottles around the kitchen, each claiming different flavours, collection months and properties, so Pete and I tasted them all. One was a delightfully peculiar blend of fruit, bitterness and an almost alcoholic sweetness, it may be possible for us to visit the place where it is made, further North.
All the food I have had here has been exciting; last night we ate river prawns that look like the lovechild of a large shrimp and a blue lobster, but taste sweet and fatty. Thai food is pretty spicy and I decided to forego some of the chilli dressings in last night’s dinner, simply to give myself a rest from a constantly sizzling mouth.
