Home again
(Lady feeding cat in back terrace: Nanxun)
I really like this shot; it feels like home. The cat is relaxed and was washing itself moments before I could unwrap my awkward camera. It stopped as its owner walked out to tip something away, but she seemed to be making conversation with the cat throughout her culinary activities. At that moment, I was observing something very average; it feels to me like I was parley to someone else’s life. Thankfully I was not spotted immediately as something foreign and I managed to catch them as they really are.
I am officially back in the UK and have returned to Glasgow. It is with the usual sentiments that I have opened the door to my bedroom to discover the chaos within, to hug flatmates tightly and be reunited with the luxuries of BBC news and being completely unremarkable to the public around me. I find that with travelling, especially for a period of weeks or more, it is an adventure to return and assess the life I left behind.
China is so utterly different from here, and even though I live in the ‘Chinatown’ area of Glasgow, its effects do not permeate my life like the atmosphere back in Suzhou. I have readjusted to saying ‘thank you’ in shops instead of a now reflex ‘xiexie’ that I was still iterating to London H&M staff a few days ago. It is amazing how quickly one can adapt to a new life, routine and language; after a few days in London, we passed a couple speaking Mandarin and I spun round to look with the realisation I could catch some of it and that it evoked a new reaction of an alternate ‘home’.
As promised, I hope to continue putting up posts here regularly until my imminent return to Suzhou in the Autumn, when no doubt even more amazing subjects will require my investigation.
