CHINESE NEW YEAR!

Welcome to the year of the Rabbit and say goodbye the Tigers! Just now, we are preparing for visitations from Ying’s family members – traditionally there is a lot of visiting and visitors at this festival. Last night we visited Ying’s maternal grandmother as well as a collection of aunts, uncles, cousins and added extras like myself and an even rarer novelty in the form of an Italian staying here on exchange. Thankfully he was the focus of attention, releasing me from a repeat of last year’s constant probing questions and cornering in kitchens. As a recent addition to the Tan New Year celebrations, everyone was very interested in where Ying found me, what I did, and not if, but when I would be marrying their relative. I hope not to court these situations this year by checking the coast is clear before foraging for another chrysanthemum tea.

I really like this instax photo from yesterday. It shows the Tans from left to right; Ying’s brother in law, his sister, father, mother, Ying himself and then Wati, the maid. Each face sports a big grin and the colours are so vividly saturated. If you’re a veteran reader, you may remember that last year at around this time, I shared this very same dish with Ying’s extended family; (have a look here) http://china.analoguegirl.co.uk/lucky-fish-dish/ I’m sure we will be sharing more lao yusheng before this new year is out!

Mosquito bite tally: still 14. Phewf.
