Half hearted Beijing

(Public telephones in the Lama Temple grounds: Beijing, China)

I loved these chubby, round hoods that shield the public telephones in Beijing – they are perky and bright in all the right urban spots. Usually they are against a drab concrete wall or near a bus stop, but this wall was different. I just like the shapes and spaces in this image; the simple curves, lines and colour made it stand out against the ornate frippery of the temple behind me.

These are the little, insignificant spots that interest me when visiting any city, wherever it is in the world. Some elements are always the same (or near enough); bus shelters, newspapers or trees. Other things will always attract me – for instance, the building styles, the tessellating blocks of the pavements and the rows of sweets in the corner shops.
