Hair by Mike
(The new haircuts)
Yesterday we went to our local shopping complex (as you do here) and went on a search for a hairdresser. Now, that is one of the things I have noticed here; hairdressers appear with greater frequency than any other kind of shop. They are everywhere – and open until 10pm every day.
This one looked promising with heaps of staff, all sporting exciting ‘avant garde’ hairstyles and big smiles. We decided to have hairdos sculpted by Mike, the ‘chief designer’ since the price was about half what one would pay in the UK for a cheap cut. We were in the hairdresser for approximately three hours, but there were no dull moments; we had our heads massaged, then our hair washed in cooling summer shampoo, (which felt tingly on my scalp, like toothpaste) followed by shoulder, arm and hand massage, ear cleaning, then finally Mike came to deliver his expertise. As you can see, he did a lovely job on us ruffians, but it didn’t even end there. At this point, Ying’s masseuse, Mary, discovered we hadn’t had any lunch and was apparently appalled. She nipped off to buy us a fresh rice dumpling and a carton of milk each, claiming we could not enjoy a haircut when hungry.
After a second hair wash (with a less refreshing shampoo) Mike finished the cuts and gave us advice on our hair and scalp. It is a much more holistic approach here than in the UK; he was able to tell us that we often stay up late, we eat spicy food too often and he ascertained that we are under a bit of stress just by looking at our heads. We explained that we just moved here and we are still settling in. That seemed to make a lot of sense to him.
Unfortunately, my Chinese is of such a level that I could hardly communicate at all with anyone, except to thank them for everything all the time. It was a lot of fun and I almost feel I can’t go back to just getting a haircut – it was so novel to have a more complete experience and to actually feel much better afterwards.

having cut your hair since you were a small child i am hurt how you have just gone to the other side of the world and stabbed me in the back ha ha
you guys look hot! doing a bit of a blue steel number- very nice.
That sounds amazing, relaxing and enlightening, who knew your head could tell so many of your lifestyle secrets.
wish i made a “mike” here, i nearly cut my own hair in front of the mirror today. Did you ever tell ying it was a combination of both me and hamish who created your last do?!
Also ear cleaning- if china is anyhting like the london underground you will be glad to have new fresh clean ears.
beautiful! x
also lunch! what a service
really good service, massage plus lunch, however, i prefer to skip the lunch, i would not want to have my lunch on the baber chair. cleaning ears, the indian barbers use to do this for their customer, but for the female customers, i can’t imagine how do you look when someone is cleaning your ear. haha, very interesting.
the price is really low, i have my hair cut at S$52 (this is after discount as i am a regular customer of my hairdresser), no washing( i prefer to wash it myself before going to him), just wet my hair again before cutting and blow dry.
rosie, i think you look good in this hair style; for ying i think he looks better with slightly longer hair, though this looks neat.
i think mike has some common knowledge of traditional chinese medicine. yes, by seeing your scalp, one may tell if you are heaty or not. a chinese friend told me that we chinese every one knows some medical knowledge. i understand what she meant, because we usually undertand our health condition and if there is small problem, we know what to eat to balance it. however, there are a lot of chinese who know nothing about the balance of ying and yang. (the ‘ying’ here is different from the name of ying. in chinese language, there are always many different words pronounced the same sound.) after some time you may learn to know what to eat when, as there are four seasons in a year, every season has its seasonal vegetables and fruit.
I love your hair style!!! Glad you are having fun in China. xx
Nice pics! You and Ying are looking good! Send him a hug on mu name!

Sweet! looking sexy, guys!
just to add to the mounds of appreciation of you two hotties! I do love the do’s
