Glen Nant

(View from Glen Nant: Taynuilt, Scotland)

Before the crushing blow of the cancelled ceilidh, the eight of us that were staying in Anna’s family home (including Anna herself, and her sister) took a walk through nearby Glen Nant. You can see from this photograph that although the weather reached blizzard proportions by the early evening, in the middle of the day it was resplendent in sunshine, sunny, but still very cold and extremely icy. A light fall of night-time snow had dusted every surface, crystallising over pre Christmas glassy black ice.

We moved initially with gusto, but that quickly faded to cautious trepidation. Every minute there would be a short yelp from one of our party as we slid off balance on the icy pathways. After stopping to take a photograph or two, my friend Michael and I were somewhat behind. And his behind was precisely what he landed on as we were rushing to catch up. Luckily his slip was on frozen foliage, providing his rump a crisp but safe landing. I almost pushed Hazel down a hill in my attempt to avert an imminent fall, but she is blessed with more balance than me, or at least more effective grips on her shoes. The views throughout the walk were spectacular and since the conditions made the walk longer, we were all ready for a lavish hot lunch when we arrived back at the warren of Anna’s house.
