Geared up
(Leaping for joy at the finish line of Wheel to the Wheel, Falkirk, Scotland)
I cannot believe it has taken a week to get as far as telling you about this cycle ride. What a week… I’ll detail the catalogue of last week’s errors and setbacks in my next post – but for this one, I’ll fill you in on Wheel to the Wheel. As you can see for starters, we all made it. There were between twenty and thirty of us involved in the end and we all managed to reach the wheel (which you can see behind us). One boy, Fergus only learned to ride a bicycle a few weeks ago and impressed everyone by rolling up to the wheel completely unscathed. I was very proud of us. For any of you that sponsored me, or any member of the team, we have raised a total of £2780.85 at this point, completely smashing our initial goal of £1500. Nice.
As for the cycle itself, I was worried we would have a rainy finish, but the rain held off for the entire route, it was just rather chilly. It being August, none of us were clad in winter wear, though I had the sense to bring two jackets, just in case. I needed them. This time was much easier than the last time I’ve journeyed this route – I am putting it down to Susan Transit’s (my bike’s) repair job – she is so much smoother to ride and according to a friend, in comparison to her bike, “it’s like cycling on an armchair”. Her bike lost it’s saddle about two thirds in, so I took a turn riding it. It required a great deal of stamina and also self will not to sit down and accidentally impale yourself on the seat bar. It was a fairly major undertaking. This swap of bicycles was when Suzy realised why I love my bike so much. “It’s so comfortable! My bum doesn’t hurt at all!” Another success chalked up by the Oxfam fundraising team.
