(Fruit seller: Beijing, China)

This is a normal sight on the streets of Shanghai; men and women laden with baskets, tubs or boxes, either lashed to their bodies or precariously balanced on shoulders or heads. The fruit is certainly fresh, though where it comes from and how it gets into Shanghai’s busy centre in that state, still in a tub or bag is a complete mystery.

Sometimes they ring a bell or have a castanet type affair to attract attention – though without warning, I have seen whole coach loads of tourists sucked in by the glistening produce and the seller besieged with jostling elbows and prying fingers, pinching the fruit on offer and haggling loudly like a flock of geese around a feed tray.
