Fish and ships
(View from the beach at Sentosa: Singapore)
In my life, I have seen a sea this colour only once before, in Thailand. Well, I have seen it a thousand times on posters, on the television, in brochures, but part of me often wonders if such a colour could really be genuine. I never really expected to see azure sea again – I treat every single trip to a exotic place as if I might never see it again, taking as much advantage of the location as possible. That’s probably why I was so exhausted by the end of my trip to Singapore!
This was taken on our last day there when Ying, his sister and I went to the island of Sentosa. This is one of my favourite views as it is part magical and part industrial. For a less than well-travelled Brit to be gazing on a sapphire sea like this and then for it to be host to so many industrial freight vessels is quite a surprise. There are hundreds, maybe thousands of ships moving to and from the port, still arguably the largest in the world. It is incredible that the sea remains so clear, when framed with high-density urban space and shipping on a colossal scale. Once again, I suppose that is just another example of extreme Asia.
