Fire away!
(Fire: Carlisle, UK)
It’s not particularly environmentally friendly, but I do miss it already. This is the wood and coal fireplace back home in Carlisle – it is around this that we bask in heat in the living room during the winter months. My mother is forever passing bins, skips and woodland to poach more wood to burn, sometimes her continual hunt for free fuel verges on the obsessive. I can remember one occasion when she passed a rubbish skip in the street full of old wooden palettes. They were all in some state of ill repair, perfectly suited for warming our hands in the house. I may be embellishing this somewhat, but as I recall, she waited until nightfall and rescued the wood from its imminent journey to landfill. It warmed the house for weeks.

I miss an open fire here. We had to make do with the ‘open fire channel’ which is only broadcast over xmas. If you watched for long enough you would see a (lumberjack’s?) arm reach in and add another log.
