Fat cat
(Looking down a close at Fat Howard: Glasgow, Scotland)
Meet Fat Howard. He is a cat of epic proportions that belongs to two friends, Gary and Candice. The picked him up from a rescue centre and brought him home in an attempt to slim him down to a more reasonable cat size. Apparently he was left in a box outside the animal rescue centre; just a sad, flabby cat in a box. It’s all very tragic, but at least now he’s in a lovely environment with a garden and huge flat to waddle about in. Several of my chums got together over the warm weekend for an early barbeque. The weather was perfect; not too hot to be in the sun and not cool enough to bother with anything more than t shirts, shorts or light dresses. This time last year in Beijing and Shanghai, the weather I experienced was much cooler than here at the same time. Bizarre.
Fat Howard accompanied us for a fair proportion of the barbeque, squatting and squinting from the lawn, but he spent most of his time lying down. Each time he moved anywhere, his very un-feline bulk seemed to weigh him down and he would sit on his back legs. A few moments later, the hind legs would give way and he would be sprawled like a cat shaped bag on the grass. He is very affable cat, despite my general mistrust of felines. I thought I caught him at his (distant) best here. He looks less comical and pitiable than usual and more nonchalant – he was looking up at me in Gary’s close with that look only a cat can muster, it might have been disdain.
Just for a fun fact, on this date last year, I was going to pick up my mum and aunt from Shanghai’s Pudong airport. Somehow I recalled today’s date as important and must have subconsciously recorded it from last year. It was to be one of the most stressful but rewarding ‘holidays’ yet. How things change in a year.
