(Desirable residence, a brick house: Shanghai)
I couldn’t resist taking a photograph of this huge town house; the rich colour of the brick and the almost archaic European influence surrounded with skyscrapers and modern high rises made me start. The windows are tremendously fun; offset with each other and with the Shakespearean balconies paint quite a romantic image. I probably caught this on a good day with only a little laundry lazily waving from the pulleys and the shutter windows flung open in a rather welcoming manner.
As I recall, this building is in the French Concession and is one of the more pleasant (and possibly expensive) houses on offer in the environs. I can only assume that because of its age, it has no air conditioning, so the open windows would have been allowing 40 degree air inside. What fun. Perhaps not such a desirable home after all…
