Darlie

(Here I am, holding up a tube of Darlie toothpaste)

Ying took this photo of me on our voyage of discovery around the old town last week.  We went into a small corner shop to browse the diverting selection of noodles and confectionery on offer.  The small ‘supermarkets’ haven’t lost their novelty for me yet, they contain such varied and exotic goods.

I was told about this toothpaste before leaving Britain and convinced Ying to try it.  I was told that as well as being exceptionally and often painfully minty, the toothpaste has a long and chequered past.  I couldn’t resist enclosing a link that illustrates my point, about halfway down the page.  Darlie used to claim to give brilliant white results comparable to the whiteness of teeth achieved by those with darker skin.  It’s of it’s time, but pretty offensive by today’s standards.

I’ve found this Tea flavoured Darlie to be rather sweet, like honey (which I admit was unnerving at first) and a refreshing alternative to boring old mint.

  1. It is my FAVOURITE brand. I was always using it when I was in China. Hope you like it. xx

  2. How extraordinary this toothpaste sounds. I must say Rosie you are looking ever so cool. And i am most definitely seeing the improvements. However your top left cavity needs a little more work. Great blog-be good!

  3. Oh dear me I followed your link. I can’t see that market strategy cutting much ice in Britain. It is amazing how things have changed in a lifetime for the better.

  4. I am surprised that Ying has never used it when he was still a young lad in Singapore – I did, and it used to be delightfully named “Darkie”!

  5. p.s. but I see from the packet that the Chinese version of the name remains – it translates to “black person’s toothpaste”.
