Laundry
(Nanxun: a lady washes her mop head in the canal)
More from my trip to Nanxun: the canal seemed to form a hub for the locals working and living there. I saw many people washing pots or cloths in the water, but there is also a man carrying his lunch on the left, and another disappearing inside, probably to collect his. From one bank of the canal, there was a scene playing out on the other to watch. The laundry is hanging right up next to the water, but this I see everywhere in China, next to every road, over every canal and outside most windows. I imagine that like Ying and I, most people change their clothes twice a day as it’s just too hot! Laundry hanging out is a constant feature of a summery China. I have no idea if the lanterns are actually lit at night or if they are there to attract tourists – possibly both. Aside from outside restaurants, the only other place I’ve seen them is in a traditional garden. I do know that red is a lucky colour here (which is why at Chinese New Year, people often wear it).

All these posts and not a single photo of yersel’s! If one were being cynical, he or she might think the two of you are hiding out in a secret underground bunker beneath Garnethill, trawling flickr for photos of China to write eloquently worded and witty anecdotes about, while all the time chuckling audibly and munching pom-bears and Mr Porkies (potentially simultaneously, producing a strange crackling guffaw)…
…but that would require an overactive and slightly paranoid imagination, and I for one am glad you’re having an ace voyage of discovery.
(Seriously though, more of yer mugs please)
did you hear that?
