Breadful news!
(The mystery in the garden: Glasgow, Scotland)
I’m afraid you’ll have to indulge me today – recent developments dictate that I must continue from the last post and bring you up to speed with the present situation. Cast your mind back to my neighbours and their outdoor carpet / plastic / tarpaulin gardening antics. What I took to be shingle or gravel yesterday turns out to be….wait for it… bread. Normal sliced white and brown bread that has been meticulously cut into cubes. It is still there, spread over the upturned carpet outside. The bread bags are pegged out, empty, on the washing line above this fragmented feast – things are reaching a weirdness fever pitch here in Glasgow.
And another thing, something very curious bothers me about the bread. No birds are eating it. Our garden attracts birds, even in its current state since there are all manner of small mini beasties hiding in the moist, dark layers of detritus that serve as fodder for all manner of bird life.
Regarding the bread, I have new theories:
- My neighbours have a crouton production line and intend to dry them out and then eat or sell them. However, the fact they have mixed the colours of white and brown suggests not.
- The bread is poisoned and they want to kill some seagulls (understandably, in my opinion).
- They are seeing what they can get away with, regarding the garden.
- They wish to make me (and potentially others) concerned and baffled.
- They are fame hungry and can’t wait to be written about on the internet by me.
- They intend to dry it and use it as ammunition for a catapult.
- They are making a bread-filled beanbag.
- It will become a cheap postage packing material.
- It will become fertiliser.
- They are mad.
Any other theories welcome.
