Boiling bunny

(Hallowe’en costume: Glasgow, UK)

This is a bit indulgent, but I spent so long sewing the bottom half of this year’s Hallowe’en costume that I can’t help but get some extra mileage out of it. I generally spend a number of weeks in early autumn pondering suitable attire for the next dressing up challenge. Since I have been travelling for the whole of my usual planning period, the whole ensemble was thrown together the evening before. However, I feel this year is no less flattering than the Charles Rennie Mackintoshes, fish, fairies, pirates and jesters of prior efforts. In case you hadn’t been able to guess, I am the White Rabbit of Alice in Wonderland fame.

Aside from the paper ears and pocket watch (constructed from a jar lid sprayed gold and a hook on a chain), I had all the other pieces of the puzzle, all except my trousers. The duvet was quite hard to manipulate around the sewing machine and I almost succeeded in knocking my mug of tea right off the desk. Once I had removed the covering fabric, I was left with sections of fluffy wadding. As well as shedding fuzz everywhere, the tangle of fibres incessantly caught around the sewing machine foot. In a bid to prevent this, I caught my right index finger under it twice. This was extremely painful – both times – and rendered me silently quivering with the pressure of sudden, sharp, localised pain.

I planned a handy elasticated waist for ease, but no sooner had I stitched the last leg seam up, when my sewing machine needle sheared completely in two. I suppose that is to be expected when creating a garment out of an old duvet. Luckily, a pair of braces served me well in keeping my insulating bunny britches over my haunches at all times. The heat generated in the trousers worked to my advantage as I am still quite full of flu and during the party I felt no need to partake of any warming alcoholic beverages. Alright, I had a solitary, but generous hot whisky toddy to see me through the evening. Dancing however, had to be kept to a minimum for fear I would cook myself from the waist down.
